Telemedicine Reimbursement
Basic Requirements of an E-Visit
An e-visit must include a real-time (live) audio-video interaction between a provider and a patient over a HIPAA compliant, secure channel. These visits are typically low complexity and delivered by licensed providers with services falling within their regular scope of practice.
E-visits have widespread clinical use cases and are reimbursed by all major payers similar to an in-person office visit. Other telehealth services, such as telephonic visits, secure email/portal and telemonitoring can be limited with respect to use cases, coverage and reimbursement.
Telemedicine Parity Law
In 2012, Michigan became one of several states to enact the telemedicine parity law requiring private payers to cover e-visits comparable to that of an in-person visit (including but not limited to benefits, copays, deductibles and allowable).
